Collections

Arrange to Get Paid

We’ll work with you to recover money you are owed, so you can move on

Our attorneys represent individuals and other attorneys who are owed money and offer legal counsel in the area of debt collection. As a matter of policy, we only take on cases in which the debt owed is $1,500 or greater.

Collecting on an outstanding debt can be very difficult. In some cases, hiring a collection agency is not a cost-effective solution. Using a collections attorney can often elicit payment quicker and at less cost.

Many of our clients are other attorneys seeking to collect unpaid legal fees. It’s important to understand that suing clients can present some risks, but, if handled correctly, it is like any other contract action. We discuss all possible outcomes of suing for collections with our clients. In many cases, a suit becomes a simple negotiation and does not need to be litigated.

Our job is to provide reasoned legal counsel as to whether a collections action is worthwhile. In some cases, collecting the debt is not worth the time, expense, or other consequences that may result. We take pride in always providing our clients with sensible advice that serves their best interests.

Post-Judgment Collections

A case is not always over after you win a judgment. Until you have been paid according to the Court’s order, you may still need to fight for what you are due. Post-judgment actions are sometimes required to enforce a court-ordered award. At Mulyk Laho Law, our attorneys are experienced in debt collections. We can help you secure the payments you are entitled to and deserve.

Post-judgment collection actions can be warranted in any type of case, including family law cases. Among other cases, our firm commonly represents other lawyers and professionals who are owed money from clients. There are numerous of post-judgment collection remedies available, including but not limited to:

  • Wage Deductions (Garnishment) – A certain percentage of a debtor’s earnings are deducted by the debtor’s employer and sent to the creditor until the debt is repaid.
  • Non-Wage Garnishment – Money belonging to or owed to the debtor is taken from a third party. Most commonly this refers to taking money from the debtor’s bank account.
  • Lien on Real Estate – A lien on real estate property gives the creditor the right have the property sold to satisfy the judgment under certain circumstances.
Our attorneys are familiar with all of the post-judgment collection options available under Illinois law.
